What we publish

We publish academic books across the social sciences and the humanities. We have a particular interest in the following subjects:

  • Economics; Political Science and International Relations;
  • Social Science; Cognitive Science and Psychology
  • Communication and Journalism; Language and Linguistics
  • Art; Philosophy; History; Anthropology; Education
  • Statistics; Business and Finance; Human Geography

We don’t publish novels, poetry, screenplays, artistic originals or other work of primarily literary/artistic (rather than academic/scholarly) value unless it is combined with some critical / reflective analysis and commentary (e.g. a Critical Edition) that would be of interest to the academic communities we serve. We don't publish academic journals and are not associated with any company that does.

Editorial values and standards.

Our acquisition process has as its central criterion the contribution of a work to knowledge, irrespective of approach or perspective. It is necessary for such a contribution to be scientifically rigorous and of current interest to the academic communities to which it belongs, but saleability is not as central to our committment to scholarship as is often the case with other publishers. Peer review, in-house editorial expertise and close collaboration with advisory editors, library information specialists, academic associations and other research communities ensure our titles are relevant and of a high academic standard.

Quality commitment.

We employ rigorous quality control processes in commissioning, production and marketing. Our manuscript selection emphasizes scientific rigor and thanks to our growing community of reviewers, all our books are thoroughly peer reviewed. Our stringent editorial control checks ensure that all books adhere to high standards of consistency, readability and coherence. Our production editors adopt a pragmatic approach to turning around a manuscript quickly and with only the necessary intervention. In keeping with our commitment to high quality, we use a mix of technologies to achieve excellent printing standards and durable hardback binding. A heavily optimized workflow eliminates production delays and ensures we harness synergies in marketing.

Maximum exposure.

We work closely with advisory editors, academic associations and information specialists to understand current trends and market our titles appropriately. In addition to traditional book marketing (review copies, catalog mailshots, fliers), we make extensive use of digital marketing tools (such as those offered by Amazon and Google), and stand ready to work with authors in promotional activities including book launch seminars, conference presentations and, where relevant, press reviews. All titles are indexed in scholarly book repositories and made available through a wide range of distribution channels including specialized resellers with a global reach (YBP, EBSCO, ProQuest, Ingram), e-book aggregators, academic libraries and of course online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

No cost burden & flexibility about sharing.

We never charge authors for publication. Our no-charge promise reflects our confidence in commissioning only high quality works, the quality of our production and the efficiency of our workflow. It also serves to protect the independence of our commissioning decisions and safeguard our mission as a publisher of works of high academic standard. Authors can elect to self-archive preprints of their work (partly or in full) subject to conditions. An Open Access option is available subject to institutional funding.

Individual attention.

We care for and pay attention to the needs of each of our authors. We only enlist qualified and sufficiently motivated experts to review your work and guide them to offer constructive criticism. This ensures that peer reviews are thorough, constructive and respectful of your effort as an author. We work closely with authors at all stages and can accommodate individual needs in editing, typesetting, visual reproduction, marketing and promotion.
