‘Passionate aging’ moves beyond the one‑sided representation of aging people as being weak and vulnerable towards a positive outlook on growing older. This involves diversifying societal images, finding purpose and meaning in life, and creating environments that reinforce meaningful roles in later life, as exemplified by initiatives such as age‑friendly cities. With the testimonials and multidisciplinary overview of scientific insights, a helpful guide for all who are interested in aging populations.

Guido Cuyvers brings a wealth of expertise and passion to the subject of aging, rooted in a distinguished academic and professional career. With a background in criminology, sexology, and philosophy from the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), he earned his doctorate in criminology, specializing in the secondary victimization of crime victims. Throughout his career, he served as a lecturer, researcher, and head of department at the Katholieke Hogeschool Kempen (now Thomas More), Department of Social Work, and was also affiliated with KU Leuven's Faculty of Psychology and Pedagogy, teaching psychology, psychopathology, organizational science, and quality assurance.
Guido has extensive experience in quality development, having published widely on the topic and serving as a member, chairman, or secretary of assessment panels in higher education institutions.
Beyond academia, he has dedicated himself to civil society, particularly in advocating for older adults and their active participation in society. As a board member and independent expert with the Vlaamse Ouderenraad, he chairs the committee on Participation and Inclusion. His commitment extends to the international level as Belgium's representative on the Administrative Council of Age Platform Europe.
Guido's writing and research focus on addressing the challenges faced by socially vulnerable groups, such as victims of human trafficking, patients in healthcare, and older adults striving for autonomy and control over their lives. With a deep passion for sharing knowledge, he conducts lectures and workshops to inspire understanding and action on these critical social themes. His work on passionate aging reflects not only his academic rigor but also his heartfelt commitment to building a society that values the dignity and contributions of every individual.
