The purpose of this book is to bring together works that highlight the relevant role of Hispanism generated in American universities, institutions such as The Hispanic Society in New York City or the magazine Hispania (AATSP). Thanks to the contributions of teachers such as Maryellen Bieder, Lou Charnon-Deutsch, Jo Labanyi, Elizabeth Starcevic, Noël Valis, or Maite Zubiaurre, and teachers such as David T. Gies, James Fernández, Thomas R. Frank, Iñigo Sánchez Llana, or Miguel Ugarte the area of peninsular liberal arts has been transformed and continues to be a fertile field for dialogue and research. This transformation has involved both adding new theoretical frameworks such as Lou Charnon-Deutsch's, with his book Narratives of Desire: Nineteenth-Century Spanish Fiction by Women (1994) or Noël Valis's The Culture of Cursilería (2003), and opening up the range of possibilities of authors such as Iñigo Sánchez Llana's Galería de escritoras isabelina (2000). References to this research are only a small sample of the contribution of American Hispanism, characterized by both the desire to open up new methodological approaches and subjects of study, and the promotion of dialogue between disciplines.
Papers that explore, among others, the following thematic axes, especially focused on the 19th and 20th centuries will be considered:
