The proposed volume will examine varied substantiations of the concept of resilience in contemporary Hispanic literary texts, foregrounding the diversity of meanings of the concept of resilience, as well as the cultural and ideological baggage those meanings carry. Chapters will shed light on the powerful and multifaceted connotations of various notions of resilience and their power to connect concepts like trial, adversity, or struggle to a broad spectrum of ideas, ranging from adaptation and flexibility to defiance and resistance, to the capacity to overcome and to reconcile, to actual recuperation and healing. The primary aim of the volume is to examine Hispanic representations of the stamina, adaptability, and potential of human individuals, groups, and/or communities when confronting or engaging with unyielding challenges, forces, or adversity.
Potential topics for chapters include (but are not limited to):
Intercultural encounter, conflict, and/or integration
Migration
Social conflict and injustice
Humor as a coping mechanism, a vehicle for healing, or method for overcoming trauma or loss
Literature and writing as coping mechanisms, vehicles for healing, or methods for overcoming trauma or loss
Diversity and social inclusion
To be considered for inclusion in the volume, please submit an abstract, not to exceed 500 words, to either of the two editors, Megan Echevarría (mertxe@uri.edu) or Iñaki Pérez-Ibáñez (ignacioperez@uri.edu) by August 15, 2023. Notifications regarding the acceptance of proposals will be sent no later than September 1, 2023. Completed chapters, not exceeding 20 double-spaced pages (including endnotes and Works Cited), will be due by December 15, 2023. Although for the preliminary proposal review, we are requesting that abstracts be submitted in English, all final chapters will be written in Spanish.
