Vernon Press invites book chapters for a forthcoming edited volume on the subject of “Emerging Technologies in Second Language Teaching and Learning: Artificial Intelligence, Adaptive Learning, Virtual Spaces, and Beyond”. This edited volume is a compilation of original research and best practices exploring innovative teaching applications in second language education over the past five years. Since 2000, the field of second language teaching and learning has seen remarkable advances in the application of instructional technology thanks to the rapid expansion of Internet access, mobile capabilities, and social media communications and applications. To make language teaching and learning more efficient and engaging, language instructors have innovatively applied emerging technologies in their teaching practices. More recently, such emerging technologies and practices include, but are not limited to, interactive 360 environments, artificial intelligence, augmented reality, chatbots, micro-credentials, mobile apps, open educational resources, personalized and adaptive learning, and virtual spaces. Chapter proposals should focus on research and best practices, including major issues relating to learning effectiveness, student outcomes, and student/faculty perspectives.
The scope of this book springs from the general theme of how emerging technologies (e.g., AI, virtual spaces, chatbots, augmented reality) offer new opportunities to teach and learn second languages. The context is higher education, but other relevant contexts are welcome.
Proposals may be related (but not limited to) the following technologies and their impacts on second language teaching and learning:
Deadline for abstract submission: February 25, 2024
Acceptance of abstracts: March 17, 2024
Final chapter submission: August 31, 2024
Please submit an abstract no longer than 500 words to Shelly Wyatt (shelly.wyatt@ucf.edu), the volume editor, by February 25, 2024. Additionally, please include a brief bibliography (max. 300 words). APA style will be used for the final submissions.
