Vernon Press invites book chapters for a forthcoming edited volume on the subject of Resilience in Spanish Literature and Cinema.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most profound global health crises of recent times, we find ourselves reflecting on the myriad ways it has transformed our lives. This unprecedented event, which brought about significant upheaval, compels us to contemplate the myriad struggles and losses endured. Yet, it also illuminates stories of endurance, strength, and resilience. Spain, profoundly impacted both economically and socially, stood at the forefront of Europe’s battle against the pandemic. The ramifications of this crisis in personal and professional spheres are vast and ongoing, mirroring the historical impact of the Spanish flu in the early 20th century, which similarly wrought havoc on the nation’s morale and economy. Throughout its history, Spain has weathered numerous challenges, not just medical but also political, from the Civil Wars and Francoist dictatorship to the loss of its Latin American colonies. These events have left indelible marks on the nation’s socio-economic fabric. In this context, we invite proposals for presentations that explore expressions of resilience in Spanish literature and film. We are particularly interested in works that delve into how Spanish society has navigated and expressed resilience during medical, political, or historical crises across any time period. This volume seeks to bring together diverse perspectives that illuminate the interplay of adversity and resilience as captured through the rich tapestry of Spanish cultural outputs.
Topics can include but are not limited to:
• Resilience in Spanish narratives during crises.
• Spanish cinema’s portrayal of adversity.
• Literary parallels between COVID-19 and the Spanish flu.
• Cultural impacts of Spain’s political strife.
• Depictions of economic struggles in Spanish media.
• Spanish cultural identity amidst historical crises.
• Shifts in artistic expression during colonial transitions.
• Interpretations of societal change in Spanish literature and film.
