‘Parallaxic Praxis: Multimodal Interdisciplinary Pedagogical Research Design’ – An award-winning publication

Parallaxic Praxis: Multimodal Interdisciplinary Pedagogical Research Design (2019), the book published by Vernon Press and written by Pauline Sameshima (Lakehead University, Canada), Patricia Maarhuis (Washington State University, US), and Sean Wiebe (University of Prince Edward Island, Canada), has been awarded a 2020 Society of Professors of Education Outstanding Book Award.

Congratulations to the authors!

Across six chapters, the book outlines the ‘Parallaxic Praxis’, which is a research framework used by interdisciplinary teams to collect, interpret, transmediate, analyse, and mobilise data generatively. Chapter seven is a collection of examples that will be very useful to the reader as a complement to the arguments presented in chapters 1-6.

The award recognises Sameshima, Maarhuis, and Wiebe’s work, which has also been praised by well-known scholars like Diane Conrad (Professor Drama/Theatre Education, University of Alberta, Canada) and Eric Hamilton (Professor of Education, Pepperdine University, and Sr. Program Manager, International Bureau of Education, UNESCO):

  • ‘Parallaxic Praxis' offers an overview of an innovative framework for research design. Its focus on interdisciplinarity, multi-modalities, arts integration, cross-sector partnerships, community engagement, and knowledge mobilization is exactly what is needed to tackle complex 21st century problems.
  • The authors open a lyrical, transcendent, and deeply credible research framework complete with its own lexicon, modalities, and practical conventions. Prepare to re-think everything.
