Call for Book Chapters: "Perspective: A Global Survey of Space Design in Art History"

Perspective: A Global Survey of Space Design in Art History explores the ways in which visual and physical space have been designed and experienced in different cultures, from the ancient world to the present day. This book seeks to amplify the significance of space as a design element by examining its implications through a global perspective of art history.

Vernon Press invites scholarly contributions of chapters that focus on a specific time and place and provide cultural context, critical insight, and visual analyses of selected examples. All relevant topics will be considered, and may include the following:

• South African (e.g., Ndebele) domestic architecture as a metaphor for the human body
• Human scale/proportion in Classical Greek architecture
• Point of view comparison (e.g., interior/exterior) of Chinese and Japanese garden designs
• Horror vacui (e.g., illuminated manuscripts)
• Sacred geometry in Islamic patterns
• The Albertian window in Italian Renaissance painting 
• The significance of cosmology in Mesoamerican architecture
• De Stijl architecture/axonometric projections
• Aleksander Rodchenko’s Spatial Constructions
• Ruled-line painting (Jiehua) in ancient China
• Implications of the miniature (e.g., Victorian dollhouses)
• Early uses of the close-up in cinematography and/or photography
• Public space in urban design
• Installation art

How to submit a proposal:

Scholars interested in contributing a chapter should email a 300-word abstract and recent CV to Sarina Miller (sarina.miller@temple.edu) by May 14, 2021, for consideration.

Timeline for completion:

Acceptance notifications will be sent in early June.

First drafts should be completed by September 30, 2021. Chapters should be between 5,000 and 6,000 words in length (including references).

Final submissions should be completed by January 30, 2022.
