Call for book chapter proposals: "Teaching, Taking, and Administering Study Abroad Programs with Cultural Humility"
Collection Theme
Cultural humility is a “process of self-reflection . . . and commitment to a lifelong learning process” [in which one lets] go of the false sense of security that stereotyping brings . . . to assess anew the cultural dimensions [of others] . . .” (Tervalon and Murray-Garcia, 1998, pp.118- 119). Originally introduced in contrast to the categorical knowledge of cultural competence and for the educational training of health professionals, cultural humility has not been sufficiently integrated, more broadly, into global learning (Habashy and Cruz, 2021).
Intending to help fill this space, we invite instructors, program administrators, third-party providers, and former study abroad students to write about teaching, taking, and administering study abroad programs within a context of cultural humility. Essays may draw on a variety of sources, including personal experience, interviews, primary research, or observation.
Possible topics
Chapter essays may consider topics such as (but not limited to) the following:
- designing study abroad programs that engage students’ cultural humility
- measuring the presence and growth of cultural humility in students who participate in study abroad
- integrating cultural humility into study abroad programs no matter where they take place or whom they host
- practices of third-party providers that promote cultural humility
- the relationship between cultural humility and cultural competence
- the long-term impact of establishing a position of cultural humility
