Call for Book Chapters Proposals: "On Death"
This volume aims to deepen the interdisciplinary exploration of death as a foundational philosophical concept and a compelling social and political phenomenon. The primary objective is to analyze its multifaceted reverberations across theoretical, phenomenological, aesthetic, ethical, socio-political, and psychological spheres. By integrating multiple perspectives, this volume seeks to explore the complex questions death raises, thereby enriching the scholarly debate on this topic, with a primary focus on arguments rooted in the continental philosophical tradition.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
Theoretical Frameworks: Investigation of death’s conceptualization within the history of Western thought, from ancient and modern metaphysics to contemporary philosophy. This encompasses death as a contradiction of life or its necessary correlative, as a principle of finitude or transcendence, and its unrepresentable or mythical forms.
Phenomenological and Existential Approaches: Investigations into death within the framework of existentialism and phenomenology, exploring the anguish of nothingness, the consciousness of mortality, and their influence on human experience.
Aesthetic Perspectives: Explorations of death's representations in art, literature, and culture, highlighting its symbolism, its relationship with creativity and artistic inspiration, and its manifestations across various aesthetic expressions.
Socio-Political Dimensions: Analyses of the social manifestations of the corpse and their political, religious, and anthropological implications. This encompasses the study of funerary rituals, mourning practices, the institutional management of death, and its impact on collective life.
Ethical Reflections: Analyses of death as an individual and collective ethical challenge, considering the broader ethical implications of human finitude, including explorations of death's foundational role in shaping concepts of human rights and dignity.
Psychological and Psychoanalytic Insights: Inquiries into the presence of death in the unconscious and its influence on the individual psyche, along with studies on the processes and stages of grief, existential anguish, and the fear of death, exploring their resonance within the human condition.
