INDEPENDENT PUBLISHER OF BILINGUAL SCHOLARLY BOOKS IN THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Call For Academics in Ecocriticism and the Environmental Humanities

Vernon Press is seeking scholars and researchers in the field of Ecocriticism and the Environmental Humanities to serve as editors and coordinate a collective book project exploring the topic of Cultural Responses to the Anthropocene in literature, art and media.

We welcome scholars whose research addresses both historical and contemporary works, drawing on theories and methodologies from Ecocriticism, environmental philosophy, posthumanism, decolonial thought, and related fields. Proposals may explore how visual and literary arts document environmental change, give voice to more-than-human agencies, and imagine sustainable futures.

This is an opportunity to expand your academic publication record and strengthen your profile for academic advancement. Please note that this is not a job offer, but a chance to collaborate on a scholarly project. Editors will independently coordinate their volumes with the full support of Vernon Press and will retain academic ownership of the project. Editors may receive royalties based on the book’s sales performance.

Add a new perspective to the Scholarly conversation on Ecocritism and environmental humanities

We are currently living in an era of profound environmental change. Scholarly research in the humanities and social sciences is increasingly addressing the ecological crisis. Art and literature provide unique ways to perceive, narrate, and respond to the complexities of environmental change. In the face of biodiversity loss, climate displacement, resource extraction, and ecological injustice, artists and writers engage with pressing questions: How can cultural narratives inspire ecological awareness and action?

As an editor, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop the thematic outline of the volume
  • Curate contributions from new and established scholars
  • Oversee the academic and editorial development of the volume, from initial proposal to final publication, with the full support of our team

We are particularly interested in volumes that ask:

  • Cultural and artistic responses to the environmental crisis
  • The role of the environmental humanities as forms of protest and activism
  • The ways in which media representations shape our perception of the climate crisis
  • Intercultural perspectives on the environmental crisis across the globe
  • Diachronic analyses of media, art, and literature to examine how understandings of the environmental crisis have evolved over time

Suggested Areas of Focus

Possible themes include, but are not limited to:

  • Analysis of the Anthropocene era in literature, film, and visual arts
  • Ecocritical approaches to historical and contemporary cultural works
  • Indigenous ecological knowledge and narrative traditions
  • Climate fiction (cli-fi) and speculative eco-literatures
  • Environmental justice, activism, and cultural production
  • Art as ecological witness: photography, installation, performance
  • Narratives of extinction, resilience, and multispecies entanglements
  • Posthumanism and the more-than-human in cultural expression
  • Memory, heritage, and ecological loss in artistic and literary contexts
  • Water, air, land: elemental aesthetics in environmental humanities
  • Comparative perspectives on environmental imaginaries across cultures

Who Should Apply

We welcome expressions of interest from academics who:

  • Are engaged in relevant interdisciplinary research related to environmental humanities
  • Are well-connected within scholarly networks

Doctoral candidates nearing completion, early-career scholars, and senior academics are all welcome to apply.

How to Express Interest

To be considered as an editor of an upcoming volume, please email us at submissions@vernonpress.com with:

  • A brief statement of interest
  • A short bio (or CV)
  • (Optional) A proposed theme or preliminary list of contributors

We are happy to discuss ideas. We can support you in drafting and organizing the volume by issuing a call for chapters to attract relevant contributions.
